Frequently asked questions

Everything Indian students ask about studying in the Canada

Chat with our Experts
What is the F-1 visa and who needs it?
The F-1 visa is the standard non-immigrant student visa for the Canada. Any Indian student enrolling in a full-time academic programme at a US university needs an F-1 visa. It allows you to study, work on campus (up to 20 hrs/week during term), and access OPT (Optional Practical Training) after graduation. NGI Academy manages the entire F-1 visa documentation and interview preparation process.
What is OPT and how does the 3-year STEM extension work?
OPT (Optional Practical Training) allows F-1 graduates to work in the Canada for 12 months in a role related to their degree. Students who graduate from a STEM-designated programme (most CS, engineering, data science, and science degrees) can apply for a 24-month OPT extension — giving a total of 36 months of work authorisation. This period is typically used to secure H-1B sponsorship from an employer.
When should I Start Your US university application?
For Fall intake (August/September), applications typically open in September–October of the prior year and deadlines fall between December and March. For Spring intake (January), deadlines are usually in September–October. NGI Academy recommends starting at least 12–14 months before your target intake — this allows time for GRE/TOEFL preparation, SOP drafting, LOR collection, and multiple application rounds.
Can I get scholarships that significantly reduce the cost?
Yes — and this is where early planning pays off enormously. Options include merit scholarships (awarded during admission), graduate assistantships (TA/RA positions that waive tuition and pay a monthly stipend), government scholarships like Fulbright, and university-specific grants. NGI Academy identifies scholarship opportunities for your specific profile and helps you craft applications that maximise your chances. Many of our students have secured 50–100% funding.
Is GRE mandatory for MS programs?
An increasing number of US universities have made GRE optional — especially post-2020. However, a strong GRE score (320+) can still significantly improve your chances at competitive programmes and scholarship eligibility. NGI Academy assesses whether GRE is advisable for your target universities and offers in-house GRE coaching if needed.
What happens after I get the offer letter?
After admission, the university issues your I-20 form. NGI Academy then guides you through: paying the SEVIS fee, completing DS-160, booking the visa interview slot, preparing financial documents, and conducting mock interviews. We also help with pre-departure formalities — forex, travel insurance, accommodation search, and arrival orientation.
